The 2S5 Giatsint-S ('Hyacinth') is the self-propelled version of two separate artillery pieces based around the same 152-mm gun, the other being a towed version known as the Giatsint-B. The chassis is made of all-welded steel and is similar to that of the 2S3, with the driver seated at the front left and the powerplant to his right. Unlike hte 2S3, however, the 2S5 lacks a turret and instead, has the commander seated in a raised superstructure behind the driver, while the gun operators are located in a crew compartment to the rear, which can be entered through a ramp. The absence of a turret is explained by the size of the 152-mm 2A37 gun, which is of considerably longer caliber (L/54) than that of the 2S3. This allows for longer range which reaches 28.4 km using standard rounds, or up to 37 km using more advanced munitions at a rate of 5-6 rounds per minute. It is also believed to be capable of firing nuclear munitions. A spade is equipped in the rear to add firing stability, while a dozer blade was fitted under the nose to help clear obstacles. Defensive armament consists of a 7.62-mm PKT machine gun fitted in commander's position and there is NBC protection as well. The 2S5 first saw service with the Soviet army in Afghanistan but has also been employed in Afghanistan as well as in the Russo-Ukrainian war, with both sides fielding it. Other export users included Belarus, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Finland.

The 2S5 (Obyekt 307) began deveopment in 1968, with the first prototypes of the self-propelled and towed versions of the Giatsint appearing in 1972, and entering service in 1976. It was given the NATO designation M1981. No variants are known to have been built, though Finnish units were known as the 152 TELAK 91.
