2S19 Msta-S

The 2S19 Msta-S was the last self-propelled artillery that entered service before the dissolution of the USSR, and was designed to replace the 152-mm 2S3 and 2S5 in Soviet (and later Russian) tank and motor rifle units. The 2S19 borrows automotive components from the T-72 and T-80 tanks and, in contrast to other SPGs, has a more tank-like arrangement of the driver seated in the front, turret in the center, and engine in the rear, with a dozer blade fitted under the nose. The entire assembly is of all-welded steel. The most noticeable characteristic of the 2S19 is its large turret, which houses a long-barreled 152-mm L/47 2A64 gun. This is capable of firing up to a range of 24.7 km or 28.9 km using base-bleed rounds; the 2S19 can use the same munitions as its similar-caliber predecessors as well as more advanced armament like Kransnopol laser-guided rounds. Loading is automatic and allows a rate of fire of 7-8 rounds per minute, or 6-7 rounds if fed externally. Defensive armament includes a 12.7-mm NSVT machine gun which can be remotely controlled, and there is NBC protection as well. The 2S19 first saw combat in the Second Chechnya War and has also been used extensively by Russia as well as Ukraine (in much smaller numbers including some captured vehicles) during their ongoing conflict. Export clients include Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ethiopia, Morocco, and Venezuela.

The 2S19 began development in the 1980s and entered service just before the end of the decade. The name Msta-S refers to the self-propelled version, while a towed version is known as the Msta-B. The 2S19M is a modernized version with a more advanced fire control system. A further deveopment is the 2S19M1 which is equipped with a 155-m L/52 gun compatible with NATO standard ammunition, it is also known as the 2S19M1-155. The newest version is the 2S19M2 with even more advanced fire control and digital equipment.
