MQ-9 Reaper

The MQ-9 Reaper is the successor to General Atomics' own MQ-1 Predator. Externally similar, the MQ-9 is in fact considerably larger and heavier and was designed from the start as a dedicated hunter-killer UCAV. The MQ-9 utilizes the same control systems as its predecessor and can also be disassembled and transported in a similar fashion. Its larger Honeywell-designed turboprop is nearly 10-times more powerful than that of the MQ-1 which allows it to fly faster while maintaining a similar endurance of about 14 hours fully loaded. Whereas the MQ-1 was limited to smaller weapons like the Hellfire, the Reaper can carry Paveway II and JDAM precision weapons, and in European service can also carry the Brimstone. The MQ-9 is currently in constant operation in key global hotspots, such as the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa in support of the War on Terror. Aside from its main operator, the USAF, it is also in service with NASA and US Homeland Security. Other users include Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and the UK. The transition of the New York ANG's 174th Fighter Wing from F-16s to MQ-9s represents the first time a manned squadron has converted to UAVs.

First flight of the prototype Predator B took place on 2 February 2001 and test versions were delivered the following year. Current versions of the Reaper are known as the MQ-9 Bk 1. Further improved production blocks include the planned BK 1-Plus with improved electrical power and communications. A further Bk 5 upgrade is also on the drawing board.
