Notes:

These rankings are designed to provide an interactive comparison of tanks throughout history. Of course, it is not meant to be an authoritative final word on what is the best tank in the world, a source of endless internet discussion which will never have a conclusive answer. Even on the battlefield, tank to tank combat depends on so many different factors (many of which, like crew training, are subjective) that one can only resort to broad generalizations particularly with tanks that have similar capabilities. The ranking categorizes tanks based on three attributes: firepower, armor protection and speed, which are generally considered the three classic qualities that a tank must have. Unfortunately, it is impossible to also include aspscts like the fire-control system which are also crucial components of a tank's lethality. The interactive nature of these rankings allows the user to choose what ratio he or she wishes to weigh these attributes. The default ratio is 4.5:4.5:1, thereby giving equal weight to firepower and protection, and giving mobility the remaining ten percent.

The calculation of the total is the sum of the following after being multipled by their respective weights, with a theoretical maximum of 100:

Firepower: For World War II vehicles, kinetic penetration measured in mm at 500 m range is used. For post-war vehicles, it is at 2 km range. Where penetration rates at 2 km are unavailable, it is estimated at 92.75% of the 1 km range. Note that most penetration values from the mid-Cold War era onward remain classified and are therefore estimated from publically avaialble data which may have considerable margins of error. Penetration data is provided for the most modern kinetic energy projectiles available to that tank before a newer variant came into service (in the case of a final variant, a new tank). So for example, the M1A1's penetration is based on the M829A1 APFSDS round which was the most modern available before the introduction of the M1A2 in 1992. Kinetic projectiles include AP, APDS, and APFSDS rounds. Chemical energy projectiles like HE and HEAT have different penetration and protection values and so are not used except in cases where the main tank weapon is a missile.

Protection: This is an average of the maximum effective protection of the turret front or mantlet and the upper hull front (glacis plate). Maximum effective protection is calculated as the thickness in millimeters divided by the cosine of the slope (measured from the vertical). Note that most armor protection levels from the mid-Cold War era onward remain classified and are therefore estimated from publically avaialble data which may have considerable margins of error. The use of composite materials and explosive reactive armor during this period also means that these values are given in rolled homogeneous armor equivalent (RHAe) against kinetic projectiles.

Mobility: This is simiply the maximum road speed.

No turret penalty: When set, this option penalizes vehicles that do not have a rotating turret such as tank destroyers and assault guns with superstructures. The penalty is calculated via the formula of (1 - Penalty%/100) + (Traverse/360 x Penalty%/100). The firepower total is then multiplied by this number, which will inevitably reduce it. In other words, a vehicle with a 180° traverse would lose 5% of its firepower under the default setting of a 10% no turret penalty.
